Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a subset of the IEEE802.11i draft standard that defines an enhanced security framework for wireless LAN based access. When WPA emerged, IEEE802.11i was in Draft 3.0 state and has been improved by the IEEE until 2004. The Wi-Fi alliance has started work on the pre-standards Draft 3.0 document to improve WLAN security before 802.11i was fully available. Based on the IEEE802.1X standard acticom provides the 802.1x, EAP framework and EAP methods required for authentication in IEEE 802 networks. With the WPA extensions, the acticom 802.1X stack can be used for secure autentication with full WPA support.

With WPA2 the Wi-Fi alliance presented an improved version of WPA based on the IEEE-802.11i (2004) specifications. Now with strong AES encryption, wireless security was enhanced again. The acticom 802.1x protocol stack also supports WPA2 with AES and TKIP encryption, including PSK (Pre Shared Key) and EAP authentication for private and enterprise networks.
